Jose Rey was walking his dog home Saturday night (June 22, 2015) in his Kendall neighborhood when one of his neighbors, 66-year-old Omar Rodriguez, accused Rey’s dog of attempting to defecate in Rodriguez’s son’s yard, and began arguing loudly. Rodriguez told police that after he spotted what appeared to be a shiny object in Rey’s hand, he went to his car and retrieved a gun from his glove compartment. Rodriguez then pointed the gun at Rey, and fired when Rodriguez appeared to move closer, according to police. A neighbor told police that Rodriguez shot Jose Rey two times. According to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s arrest report, Rodriguez also threatened to shoot Rey’s wife, Lissy, when she ran over to help her husband.
Omar Rodriguez didn’t even live in the neighborhood, his son did. Rodriguez lived in another neighborhood some distance away. Rodriguez has restraining orders against him in his own neighborhood for aggressiveness and violent threats. Rodriguez has also been caught on surveillance cameras randomly verbally assaulting passerby’s.
Rodriguez was arrested for assault around the time of the incident. I imagine it will be upgraded to at least manslaughter.
